Hey guys, itās November and this is the third edition of the Dyslexic Writerās Newsletter. Welcome.
This month I want to introduce you to Lydia Swan on Medium who has been writing an A -Z guide on dyslexia. Dyslexia is a rather complex condition and there is a whole nature vs nurture debate on this.
For example, itās genetic. Thatās evident in my family as my maternal grandfather had it, my father potentially has it, I have it, and I married someone with it, so my daughter was just guaranteed to be born with the gift as it came at her from all sides of the family.
When we talk of nurture dyslexia is on a spectrum, just like autism or ADHD. With the right resources and support, I can function just as well as neurotypical brains when it comes to reading and writing, but itās important to get the support as early as possible.
Sadly, not everyone is as lucky as me. I was diagnosed at school, but it is estimated that 70% of dyslexics are not diagnosed until adulthood!
This leads to this monthās discussionā¦
š¬ āWhen were you or a loved one diagnosed with dyslexia? If not, would you like to be diagnosed or do you see it as labeling?ā
If you are an educator what support do you give to someone showing the signs of dyslexia or a cluster of conditions, i.e. dyspraxia, ADHD, Discaculer, and/or Autism?
Share your stories, experiences, what you want from this newsletter, or any questions in the comments sectionā¦
